| Greig finishes top ten at world juniors |
| 16 March 2010 |
| Daniel Greig has skated to a top ten result at the World Junior Speed Skating Championships, finishing seventh in the 500m.
Greig’s time of 36.18 in the first of the event’s two heats was just .01 off his national record posted in January this year, while the overall placing was a massive improvement on last year's result where he finished in 45th place in the same event.
“In Daniel’s first 500m he was just 0.2 from third place,” said Australian speed skating coach Desley Hill.
“In the second one he was unfortunate as he was warmed up and on the line then they called a seven minute delay due to ice repair. So he and his opponent were cold by the time they started the race and weren’t at their best.”
“We still have to learn a lot, but we have time on our side as he has only skated for a short time and the rest of his competitors have been skating much longer.”
Greig followed up with 11th place in the 1000m, in a time of 1:12.16.
Brooke Lochland, contesting her first real international event for Australia, skated a personal best in the 500m, registering 42.93 seconds to finish in 52nd place.
Lochland then set a new Australian senior record of 2:11.37 in the 1500m, taking another half second off her January record time to place 45th. (Courtesy of Frank Anderson, australianspeedskating.blogspot.com) [more] |
